Radiation Effects and Events Hub
Our Inspiration
Houston has a long history of archival work, a tradition that we continue here. Beginning in the 1980s, the Texas Medical Center (TMC) Library’s McGovern Historical Center has preserved archival material related to radiation effects and events, particularly related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC).
Since then, this effort has expanded to include materials related to radiation effects and events in the Soviet Union and beyond. Archival collections have increased in tandem, both within the TMC Library and at neighboring institutions, most notably Rice University. This website provides a brief overview of notable archives and their contents, as well as advocacy groups that have developed in response to radiation effects and events.
This hub was created by students with the support of faculty at Rice University and the Schull Institute in Houston, Texas. As scholars, we believe in raising awareness and facilitating individual education about the history and impact of nuclear events.
Our special thanks to...

The Schull Institute
The Schull Institute was founded in 2000 by Dr. William Jackson "Jack" Schull to promote education and mentorship for researchers working in a variety of scientific fields, including archival research. Their goal is to preserve the integrity of scientific investigation and support humanitarianism both locally and globally. This hub is maintained and developed by Schull Summer Scholars under the mentorship of Schull Institute mentors.

Rice University
The creators of this hub are recent graduates of Rice University, who began this project in conjunction with faculty in Medical Humanities. The Dialogues Across Health, Science, Humanities and Archives (DAHSHA) and Rice Research Repository at Rice University provided inspiration and references for the creation of this hub.

The Texas Medical Center Library and the McGovern Historical Center
The Texas Medical Center (TMC) Library and the McGovern Historical Center (located within the TMC Library) are invaluable resources for scholars, and have been critical to the creation and maintenance of this site. Two of their online archives are highlighted in our Archives section. Some of their collections may be accessed online and appointments may be made to visit in-person.
